Media discourse on science goes further than the process of scientific popularisation in the sense that it relates subjects of scientific and social reality, actors and events within the public sphere. Beyond its role to inform, the task of the press is to focus debate on a configuration of interdependent elements selected from an entanglement of scientific and social problems. Medicine, considered as a generic domain of scientific press communication, serves as our example to investigate representations of actors (physicians) and medical science, and the very different media strategies and attitudes adopted, which either accentuate "medicalization" or maintain a critical distance with regard to medical science.
